This is one of the main questions that we ask ourselves when it comes to cleaning. How often should I clean my couch? Maybe every day? Or just once a year? The answer to this, at first look simple question, is very dependant of the situation. Usually the type of the couch’s fabric is the main factor, which decides the time between each cleaning.
So, our first job is to determine the possible types of fabric that you may have in your home. There are usually four commonly used kinds of couch’s fabric: nylon, cotton, polyester and microfiber. These four types of materials are all unique and, of course, a different cleaning approach has to be applied for all of them.
-Nylon Fabric: This synthetic fabric is very durable and usually highly resistant to dirt and stains. You won’t have to clean it on a regular basis, because it is very sustainable and in most of the cases can hold up very high levels of wear and tear. These types of couches receive a lot of use, but in fact this is what they are mode for. Clean them thoroughly once every 3 to 5 months, depending on the situation in your home – pets, small kids, etc.
-Polyester Fabric: Another synthetic material, which is actually very beautiful, as well as durable. We can say that all the synthetic fabrics are stain resistant and a perfect choice for people, who will use the couch often, but don’t want to waste much time on cleaning and maintenance. Again a complete cleaning once every 4 to 5 months will be more than enough.
-Cotton Fabric: One of the most comfortable fabrics, which you can find out there in the market. Cotton is also a durable material that will usually look good and cool for years to come, however, this organic fabric can be easily stained and polluted. As almost any other natural fabric, you have to keep it well cleaned and maintained, especially if you accidentally spill something. Fast and accurate treatment is a must in such cases. Anyway, a regular cleaning and maintenance should be performed once every 1 or 2 months.
-Microfiber Fabric: The last type of fabric on my list is one of the most stain resistant and durable materials. The microfiber fabric is usually man-made and its fiber are tightly woven, which makes it very resistant to dust and a excellent choice for any allergy sufferer. When it comes to this couch’s fabric you can go without a complete cleaning up to 6 to 7 months.
I think that the answer to the question, how often should I clean my couch, was pretty clear. However, what I mean by a “clean completely and thoroughly” isn’t just a simple wipe-and-go task. The whole process involves pre-treatment, initial cleaning and drying and each of these task should be executed carefully and the right way. So, in my personal opinion the best way to have your couch cleaned a hundred percent successfully is, of course, a professional cleaning. I prefer to call for an upholstery cleaning in Melbourne 2 or 3 times a year and avoid messing the couch with my limited cleaning knowledge and poor skills.
